Tax Incentive Programs

Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Incentive Program (SR&ED)

About: A Canadian government initiative to encourage businesses in all sectors to invest in research and development. The program provides tax relief for qualified participants in two different ways:
1) deduction of SR&ED expenditures from you income
2)  provides you with an investment tax credit to reduce your income tax payable 

Amount: Varies

Requirements: Must meet the definition of scientific research and experimental development (SR&ED) in subsection 248(1) of the Income Tax Act. To determine if your business venture qualifies for the SR&ED tax incentive initiative, please read consult this document.

Funding Programs

Ontario Centres for Excellence (OCE)

About: Provides funding resources and investment opportunities for early-stage projects primarily originating in Ontario’s publicly-funded colleges and universities with a high probability of commercial success.

Amount: Varies 

Requirements: The OCE  provides opportunities in four sectors:
1) advanced manufacturing
2) advanced health technologies
3) energy and environment
4) information, communications and digital media.

In terms of funding programs, the OCE has a program suite in three areas:

  • industry-academic R&D collaboration
  • commercialization
  • entrepreneurship.

Accelerators

NEXT Canada

Three different program opportunities are provided for start-ups:
NEXT 36

About: NEXT 36 is the NEXT Canada flagship program, offering students from a variety of disciplines the opportunity to work with some of Canada’s top business leaders, up to 80K in funding and a chance to learn from the initiative’s award-winning faculty.

Amount: Up to 80K

Requirements: The program is open to students or recent graduates with pre-revenue and pre-seed investment start-ups. Ventures must be scaleable and offer high-growth potential. Teams may be new or pre-existing.

NEXT Founders

About: The NEXT Founders program provides founders and CEOs with the resources to scale their business quickly. Participants have access to various business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors and community of peers to assist with the development of innovative business ideas to help their business grow. 

Amount: Up to 30K

Requirements: The program is open to venture founders/CEOs with a team in place and have reached some key milestones (e.g. funding, revenue, user base). Ventures must be scalable and offer high-growth potential.

NEXT AI

About: The NEXT AI program was launched in 2017 to assist in the development of intelligence-related venture commercialization. Participants have access to a network of Canadian business leaders, entrepreneurs and industry-related faculty members.

Amount: Up to 200K

Requirements: The program is open to students, recent grads, researchers and industry professionals involved in AI-enabled ventures. Individuals or existing teams involved in pre-revenue and pre-seed ventures may apply.

Founder Fuel

About: Founder Fuel offers a three-month intensive program designed to accelerate company growth. Participants receive direct access to a network of mentors and investors; support from the Founder Fuel team;  skills workshops and bootcamps; office space at Notman House; and connection to the Montreal-based startup community.

Amount: 100K to 1.9M

Requirements: Participants must have a founding team of two or more people, technical co-founder to build product, a full-time team dedicated to company growth, and be based in Montreal (or willing to relocate).
